  • episode #272 – Summer Break!

A day late, but definitely not a dollar short!  This last episode before our summer hiatus is jam-packed with myboytheriotgirl classics, sprinkled with a few new songs and a mingling of some tracks from underplayed albums from some of our favourite artists.

What three-hour show would be complete without some New Pornographers, Sparklehorse, Spoon, Fiery Furnaces, The Elected, Electrelane, Hefner etc.?  The fact that many of the bands that we built this show on year after year are no longer making new music illustrates part of the reason for this break.  As Mike likes to say, “indie-rock is a young person’s game”.  We don’t have as much time to see late night shows, or listen to music with the attention this show requires.

We haven’t committed to never doing another show, but for now we’re taking a break.  We’re going to be focusing on community, family and weeding!  But before we do that, Mike and I wanted to leave you with a three-hour show that will hopefully find it’s way into your summer rotation.  We think it will sound as good by the lake as it will on a train or in a car or in the garden.  Enjoy!

  • episode #271 – Mike’s undoing

This was meant to be your Victoria Day long weekend playlist, but in true V-day style, the long-weekend festivities spilled out from their three-day container and into real life. We did, however, hear the new Japandroids track a billion times, and we love it (so press play and hear it)!

But fear not, this week’s show is a two-hour, multi-purpose extravaganza billed as the last one programmed just by Mike before we bow out for the summer, and as playlist to it. Hopefully this 29 song show (chock-full of new & timeless Canadian indie tracks) will tide you over until our next and final show, on June 6th, programmed by yours truly.

Check out tracks off new albums by PS I Love You, Best Coast, Patrick Watson, Great Lake Swimmers, & Zeus, and sit back and nod along to Mike’s hometown faves Manitoba, Junior Boys & Luke Doucet. Plus he couldn’t avoid a trip down memory lane with more than a few stops in the 90s.

  • episode #269

This week is a quick look back at some of the new music from 2012 that has been lingering on our iPods and ringing in our ears an awful lot.  As you might have guessed from their regular appearances on the show, we can’t stop listening to Chairlift, Sleigh Bells and Shearwater, three American bands that put out very, very listenable discs earlier this year.

From closer to home, there’s Kathleen Edwards’ Voyageur, and Toronto’s Bahamas to keep us occupied. We also hear a track from Winnipeg’s Royal Canoe, via a recommendation from Music Between Friends / Indilicious on 93.3 CFMU. Those myboytheriotgirl fans looking to find other sources of indie-pop after we close up shop in June should look to Katie and Sasha for all their music needs.

We also hear some songs off of albums released late last year that are still growing on us, like those from Wilco and Underworld (going strong since before we were born!). And of course, sprinkled throughout are some classic tracks from local-boy Caribou, and a fave of Megan’s by Modest Mouse.

We’re off next week, but will be back in time for Mike’s sole-sourced birthday show. Just a few episodes left, so make your requests while you can, and thanks for listening!

    1. Shearwater – You As You Were (Animal Joy)
    2. Chairlift – Wrong Opinion (Something)
    3. Underworld – Always Loved A Film (Barking)
    4. Caribou – The Barn (Marinoaudio)
    5. Royal Canoe – Hold on to the Metal (Extended Play)
    6. Field Music – Just Like Everyone Else (Plumb)
    7. Andrew Bird – Near Death Experience Experience (Break It Yourself)
    8. Kathleen Edwards – Going to Hell (Voyageur)
    9. Bahamas – Where You Go (Barchords)

    14. Modest Mouse – Bukowski (Good News For People Who Love Bad News)
  • episode #268 – Adventures In Your Own Backyard

The impending summer hiatus of myboytheriotgirl has made a priority out of stuffing as much music as we can into shows, so behold, 57+ minutes of music glory for your ears’ pleasure.

Starting off with the lead track off of Atlas Sound’s 2011 disc Parallax, we then get to a track from the highly anticipated album from secretive Canadian duo Purity Ring. The Halifax/Montreal band will be releasing Shrines on July 24th, and we can’t wait for it!

And speaking of acts out of Montreal with albums you can’t wait for: Polaris winner Patrick Watson and band have just released their latest (yesterday). Having listened to it a few dozen times on the CBC Music website, we can’t get enough of this delicately crafted pop, so we end the show with the first three tracks off the disc.

Before that, though, we get to a couple of dedications (New Order to Brendan,  and Land of Talk to Regan), some Screaming Females followed by a female screaming, and classics by the Fiery Furnaces, Peter Bjorn & John, and The Besnard Lakes (more Montreal!)

Also, since this video is just so darrrrling, you should take five minutes and watch it to behold the talent that is Patrick Watson & co.

  • episode #267

Getting ready for the long goodbye, we play bunch of new music on this week’s show, including Beach House, Sweden’s jj, and Sun Kil Moon. And, of course, new music is always well complemented by old favourites by The Cure, Le Tigre, and Broken Social Scene.

The music probably says more than the words can, so give us a listen while you can: there are only a few episodes of myboytheriotgirl left before we go on a nice long summer hiatus following our ninth season on air.

And after that, who knows! Due to the time constraints of life, we’re thinking of taking a break from the weekly show format.  Because indie-pop is a young person’s game, it’ll be good to clear the way for some new blood on the airwaves at CFMU 93.3FM in the autumn, but we’re considering the possibility of a less-frequent (bi-weekly? monthly?) podcast available here on our website, along with our annual Christmas and Best-of-the-Year shows.

So. What do you think, oh dear listeners?

    1. Beach House – Myth (Bloom)
    2. Daniel Rossen – Silent Song (Silent Hour / Golden Mile – EP)
    3. The Cure – Just Like Heaven (Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me)

  • episode #266

Your weekly dose of indie pop and rock is in, and it’s a satisfying melange of new and classic tracks, with a healthy helping of Canadian artists.  We start things off with a set dedicated to a long-time fan, hearing from a couple of Vancouver electronic artists (Teen Daze & Little Chords) that she’s in love with.

We also get to a cute little track from buzz-band Hospitality, and an old favourite by Sparklehorse that should bring back memories.  Things wind down with some material of Andrew Bird’s latest, a track from a Guelph duo called Memoryhouse, and another timeless-sounding nod back to the 90s courtesy of Boards of Canada.

After Rae Spoon destroys London, we let Dan Bejar’s Destroyer play us out with the lead-track off his wonderful 2006 release, Destroyer’s Rubies.  We’ll be back next week, so send us your requests, recommendations and hit-lists, and tune back in next Wednesday!

  • episode #265

Hamilton Place’s Studio Theatre is quickly becoming one of our favourite concert venues in Hamilton, and last night’s Sandro Perri show only reinforced that belief. The show started at a reasonable time, and for a bucks more than you’d pay at one of our city’s great club venues, the (seated & intimate) audience was treated to almost two hours of music from a fantastic songwriter and very talented bandmates.

So in tribute to Sandro’s quiet, unspoken style, let’s get straight to this week’s music, featuring a great new tracks from upcoming releases by Dirty Projectors, and M. Ward; plus Juno-winner Feist, Toronto’s The Wooden Sky, and a neat John Maus track created for Record Store Day (on April 21st).

So without any further ado, here’s this week’s show. Thanks for listening!

  • Odds and Ends

So now that twitter has stopped buzzing about South by Southwest (SXSW), it’s time for us late-to-the-party music lovers to share some of the goodies that surfaced from the festival.

Brooklyn NY’s Hospitality is a lovely indie pop crew with the same infectious hooks that the New Pornographers do so well.    The group made a number of ‘best of SXSW’ lists, and the video (below) for the catchy Friends of Friends features the hilarious Alia Shawkat from Arrested Development fame.

Sticking with the Strong Female Lead, Charli XCX is a “British goth-pop upstart” rumoured to be releasing both a debut EP and LP in the coming months.  Here’s a taste of what to expect, her third and latest released track, I’ll Never Know:

Back here in the great white (?) north, artists from across the country gathered in Toronto for Canadian Music week.  We’re going to refer you to this entry, where Torontoist offers their retrospective along with some pictures and reviews.

One of the most highly reviewed performances at Canadian Music Week was John K. Samson & The Provincial Band.  Samson released his first (and only?) solo album earlier this year.  We couldn’t find a video of the CMW performance, so here’s a live version of “When I Write My Master’s Thesis” recorded for Exclaim tv.

In other news, one of our favourite artists, M. Ward, has a new album coming out in April (his first solo since 2009 – although he’s been keeping busy with She & Him).  Here’s the first video from A Wasteland Companion:

Watch for these and other new tracks on the next episode of myboytheriotgirl.

  • episode #264 – Port of Nowhere

We’re back following  a post-fundraising break (you can still DONATE to CFMU 93.3FM, and we encourage you to do so if you haven’t yet!), and begin by flexing our late-night-radio muscles.  Since we can do pretty much whatever we want at 2am on our ad-free, 95% music podcast, Mike and I decided to sample from two newly released albums that piqued our interest.

The first, Sounds From Nowheresville by English do The Ting Tings, has received mixed reviews, but we’d been lured by their bouncy pop sounds in the past, and think it’s worth a casual listen.  And we end the show with the first three tracks of indie stalwarts The Shins’ latest release Port of Morrow. Still mixed reviews, but considerably better than the ones the poor Ting Tings received.

And as always, myboytheriotgirl packs in a mix of independent pop and rock that you’re unlikely to hear anywhere else on the radio dial, including Futureheads spinoff Field Music, and Toronto-based chanteuse Emma-Lee who is touring in support of her 2012 disc Backseat Heroine (and playing this Friday at The Drake in Toronto). We also use the way-back machine to hear some Blondie from 1976 (I think that Pipettes’ “Call Me” summoned her, despite not being a cover of the classic 1980 song).

So press play, sit back, read a book, maybe get some work done, and thanks for supporting community radio in Hamilton!

    1. Emma-Lee – Not Coming By (Backseat Heroine)
    2. The Rural Alberta Advantage – The Deadroads (Hometowns)
    3. The Ruffled Feathers – Our Beautiful Hearts (Oracles )

    7. The Ting Tings – Soul Killing (Sounds From Nowheresville)
    8. The Ting Tings – Day To Day (Sounds From Nowheresville)

    11. The Pipettes – Call Me (Young Galaxy Remix) (Young Galaxy Versus)
    12. Blondie – Rip Her To Shreds (Blondie)
    13. The Shins – The Rifle’s Spiral (Port Of Morrow)

  • episode #263 – raise ya voice!

Every year, CFMU 93.3FM turns to the Hamilton community to help support the station’s operating expenses through donations. Whether it’s $5, $30, or $200, it’s all greatly appreciated, and it all goes to keeping independent, community programming on our local air-waves.

We here at myboytheriotgirl think that an investment in community radio is a no-brainer: for the price of a couple of lattes, you can keep a slice of the airwaves safe for unique local programming like CFMU’s Sunday, a smorgasbord of cultural programming, from Lithuanian to Latin American.

This year, a $30 donation gets you a Friends of CFMU card, good at a variety of Hamilton venues, businesses and attractions like This Ain’t Hollywood, Dr. Disc and the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

And of course, you’ll also keep shows like ours, or Indie-licious, on-air, playing independent music from around the block and around the world. No top-40 or corporate playlists, just a mix of music you won’t hear anywhere else on the dial.

So without further ado, we present this year’s fundraising show, featuring a preview of the new Andrew Bird album, Break It Yourself. As always, we also have a sampling of new and upcoming releases (Band of Skulls, Dirty Ghosts, Sun Kil Moon), and old favourites (Hayden, Doves).
