Stay tuned… -
Strange Mercy
Megan blew my mind last night with all the great new music she acquired for upcoming episodes. The next three mbtrg shows aren’t even recorded yet, but they’re already teeming with material from artists who will be releasing albums this fall. So we figured we might as well share a bit of it, since I think patience is something that was extinguished with the invention of the smartphone.
First off, we promised we’d get you new material from Feist whenever she released it, and she has! “How Come You Never Go There” is the first track off her upcoming Metals LP, and it lands in stores the first week of October. We’ll get to it on the show next week, but give it a listen now:
But more exciting (to someone like me) is the September 13th release of St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark)’s follow-up to her lauded 2009 album, Actor. I loved that disc, and judging by “Surgeon”, it sounds as though Clark’s taking things down an even more unconventional path for the upcoming Strange Mercy.

goin’ back #1
We’re using the time machine (aka mbtrg’s eight years of archives) to go back just in time for Halloween 2007, and a slew of completely un-scary tunes from that era.
There’s some classic Belle & Sebastian (from a [wikipop search=”This is just a modern rock song”]1998 EP[/wikipop]), Beirut, who just released [wikipop search=”The Rip Tide”]their latest [/wikipop]last week. We’re guessing [wikipop]In Rainbows[/wikipop] must’ve come out around then, and there’s [wikipop search=”Broken Social Scene”]BSS[/wikipop], [wikipop]Cat Power[/wikipop], [wikipop]Cuff the Duke[/wikipop], and [wikipop]Boards of Canada[/wikipop], to boot!
We’ll be back next week with a new show, featuring [wikipop]Washed Out[/wikipop], [wikipop]Cut Off Your Hands[/wikipop], [wikipop search=”Destroyer (band)”]Destroyer[/wikipop], & [wikipop]Handsome Furs[/wikipop], so tune in at 93.3 CFMU!

headin’ north
Dispatched to [wikipop search=”Canadian Shield”]The Shield[/wikipop] and won’t be able to put together a new show this week, however we’ll re-broadcast a classic episode in its place. In the meantime, here are two very different tracks that are stuck in our heads right now.
First off, a track by [wikipop]Fiery Furnaces[/wikipop] leading lady [wikipop]Eleanor Friedberger[/wikipop]. Her first solo album is called Last Summer, and “My Mistakes” is perfectly appropriate for a lazy August Sunday.
And then, an incredibly powerful and stripped-down take on the Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs” by Norway’s Mr. Little Jeans (who is a Ms). Megan remarked that hearing the song this way makes the lyrics sound even more bleak and tragic than the original.

episode #240 – Is This It
We can’t believe it’s been a decade since The Strokes uttered their famous statement/question(?), [wikipop]Is This It[/wikipop], and Stereogum has issued a downloadabe tribute album that is worth a bit of a listen. As such, we hear a couple of the stronger tracks in the collection by [wikipop]Peter Bjorn & John[/wikipop], and [wikipop search=”Real Estate (band)”]Real Estate[/wikipop], (the former having recently released a new disc, and the latter putting out a follow-up to their 2009 self-titled debut this fall).
Also this week, some new music from other bands releasing albums this fall: [wikipop search=”M83 (band)”]M83[/wikipop], [wikipop]Dum Dum Girls[/wikipop], and locals [wikipop]Ohbijou[/wikipop] (who will also be playing This Ain’t Hollywood on September 28th).
And since that Dum Dum Girls track sounds like an unabashed rip off of [wikipop]Mazzy Star[/wikipop]’s 1994 hit “Fade Into You,” we end with a trippy cover over that song by Vancouver’s the Western Magnetics.
- Peter Bjorn & John – Is This It (Stereogum Presents… STROKED: A Tribute To Is This It)
- Little Dragon – Little Man (Ritual Union)
- M83 – Midnight City (Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming)
- Cut Copy – Hanging Onto Every Heartbeat (Zonoscope)
- Real Estate – Barely Legal (Stereogum Presents… STROKED: A Tribute To Is This It)
- Kurt Vile – Jesus Fever (Smoke Ring For My Halo)
- Noel Gallagher – The Death Of You And Me (Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds)
- Bon Iver – Calgary (Bon Iver)
- The Pack A.D. – Sirens (Unpersons)
- The Fiery Furnaces – Here Comes the Summer (EP)
- Dum Dum Girls – Coming Down (Only in Dreams)
- Ohbijou – Niagara (Metal Meets)
- The Western Magnetics – Fade Into You

gettin’ back to the grind…
We followed the [wikipop search=”Polaris”]North Star[/wikipop] across the pre-dawn sky and made it home safe and sound, in time for Wednesday’s show. And speaking of Polaris, we’ll highlight a few of the Prize’s short-listed albums this week, along with a new release from Vancouver’s [wikipop]Dan Mangan[/wikipop], and perhaps something by [wikipop search=”Feist (singer)”]Feist[/wikipop], who just announced an upcoming album on her website. Due out in October, Metals will be the first album from this [wikipop search=”Broken Social Scene”]BSS[/wikipop] chanteuse since 2007’s The Reminder, and of course as soon as we hear any of the new songs, so will you!

these ladies are red hawt
We hear the mercury’s still resting at the top of thermometer back home, so thought it might be appropriate to pass along links to a couple of tracks by artists who burn up their respective genres.
It’s no secret that here at mbtrg, we’re addicted to [wikipop]Sarah Harmer[/wikipop]. This Burlingtonian is our hometown heroine, and her work to protect the Niagara Escarpment from aggregate development only deepens our love for this politically active folkie. She’s become so synonymous with the Canadian music scene that she was recent asked to write a song to celebrate Parks Canada‘s 100th anniversary.
There doesn’t seem to be a readily available version of ‘The Park Song’ that we can post here, but you can hear English and French versions via CBC Radio 2’s website. Thanks to Amy for passing this along!
Secondly, our favourite garage rock duo, Vancouver’s [wikipop]The Pack A.D.[/wikipop] just released a new single off their upcoming Unpersons, due out in September. We fell in love with Becky Black and Maya Miller’s music the second we heard their sophomore album, Funeral Mixtape, and were particularly disappointed that the Polaris Prize jury didn’t recognize their great 2010 disc, We Kill Computers.
But that doesn’t mean you have to ignore them too. Take a listen to this blistering track, ‘Sirens,’ and thanks to Ben Rayner and the Sound Check Blog for posting it last week!

dispatch from the carolinas
It’s a weird feeling to have Canadian indie music follow you all the way through the Appalachians, but CBC Radio 3 knows no bounds! While we don’t have a new podcast to post this week or next, CFMU 93.3FM in the Hamilton area will have a couple of new and classic mbtrg shows to listen to on-air, instead.
And though neither of us would dare look like the hopeless addicts surfing their smartphones down by the beach, a rain-break is giving us a few minutes to post some of tracks that made our ears perk up over the past week (speaking of rain, another thank you to Michael for tending to our house and garden as the mini-drought still grips Hammertown).
First, a neat cover of a [wikipop]Wintersleep[/wikipop] song by [wikipop]Land of Talk[/wikipop]:
And here’s a song that really takes us back to the early days of mbtrg. Listen for the crickets in the background of this song ([wikipop search=”Moving Pictures, Silent Films (album)”]Moving Pictures, Silent Films[/wikipop] was recorded in an abandoned grain silo) and thank [wikipop search=”Great Lake Swimmers”]Tony Dekker[/wikipop] for the summertime atmospherics.

episode #238
Back in the summer that the [wikipop]Warsaw Pact[/wikipop] was dissolved, the [wikipop]SNES[/wikipop] was released, and [wikipop]rave[/wikipop] was beginning to give way to [wikipop]trip-hop[/wikipop], we were just ignorant children, unaware of all the great music that we’d have to catch up with when we got into our teens. This week we take a quick look back at some tracks one or both of us missed 10, 15 and 20 years ago (and due to the magic of aging, are now wise enough to appreciate).
From 2001 there’s [wikipop]Scout Niblett[/wikipop] and [wikipop]Sparklehorse[/wikipop], and from 1996 we hear [wikipop search=”Weeping Tile (band)”]Weeping Tile[/wikipop] (summer being the season everyone medically requires extra doses of Sarah Harmer’s voice). Going back further to 1991, we play songs from Blur’s debut album, a hit by the [wikipop search=”Sugarcubes”]Sugarcubes[/wikipop] ([wikipop]Bjork[/wikipop]’s old band) and something off of [wikipop]Primal Scream[/wikipop]’s [wikipop]Mercury Prize[/wikipop] winning album, [wikipop]Screamadelica[/wikipop].
Of course, we’ve got plenty of new music too, including tracks from the upcoming albums from [wikipop search=”Beirut (band)”]Beirut[/wikipop] and Hooded Fang. HF’s debut, Album is long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize, as is [wikipop]Land of Talk[/wikipop]’s Cloak and Cypher (which we eschew in favour of a song of their 2006 debut). The short-list is to be announced this afternoon, and when we’re back from vacation we’ll be sure to have a show dedicated to the short-listed artists.
We hope you enjoy the show, and we’ll be back in late July!
- Beirut – Santa Fe (The Rip Tide)
- Hooded Fang – Vacationation (Tosta Mista)
- The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – I Wanna Go All The Way (Belong 7″)
- Land of Talk – Summer Special (Applause Cheer Boo Hiss)

- Japandroids – Wet Hair (Post-Nothing)
- Lykke Li – Get Some (Wounded Rhymes)

- Sparklehorse – Piano Fire (It’s A Wonderful Life)
- EMA – Milkman (Past Life Martyred Saints)
- The Sugarcubes – Walkabout (Stick Around for Joyl)

- Arctic Monkeys – Brick By Brick (Suck It And See)
